The Brothers Bulger (130-217)

SUMMARY

Anyone who was affiliated with the gang, was either in prison or a fugitive. The gang only had two members now; Whitey and Stevie. A man named Steven Hughes Jr. seeked revenge on Whitey and Stevie Flemmi, however they beat Hughes Jr. at his own game. Whitey never loses. Whitey is insane!- he threw french fries at a man who had his gut popping out of his t-shirt. As he aged, he was obsessed with staying healthy physically. Because of less people in the gang, it was weaker than the Mafia and Whitey knew this. When Whitey killed so many people, he liked to make a statement either by disappearing the body. Another way Whitey intimidated the Mafia with such a small gang was through selling drugs.

Billy, exactly like his brother, loves being in control... "It didn't matter much to Billy who won the governorship. Who ever the government was, he going to have to play ball with Billy, and abide by his rules" (Carr 154). He was living happily and in control. This is kind of the opposite of Whitey. Billy can travel anywhere he wants for a vacation, a stress-free one. However, Whitey (although he may not have admitted it) was never worry-free.


QUOTE

"That evening, Corsetti was sitting by himself at the bar when an average-sized, middle-aged man pulled up the stool next to him.
'You're Paul Corsetti, aren't you?' he said.
Corsetti nodded, and the garrulous fellow made more small talk, until finally Corsetti said, 'I'd like to talk to you, but I'm waiting for somebody.'
The man's smile disappeared. 'You're waiting for me mother**r,' he said. 'I'm Jimmy Bulger and I kill people'" (Carr 139).


REACTION

His whole life it has been pretty obvious that hes the man. Nobody messes with Whitey Bulger. This quote shows that even though he was a very popular man back then, he was not easily recognizable. Corsetti could have died on the spot right during their conversation. What is very frightening is the last sentence,"I'm Jimmy Bulger and I kill people". Whitey told Cosetti who he is by his first name and last name rather than Whitey. He said "I kill people". This should scare any body who was told a full name and that that person was a murderer. It shows that Corsetti will die, which he does, and he could not have done anything about it.
