CANDY 72-178

SUMMARY
Candy invited Joe to go with her to the zoo and while she focussed on the animals, all Joe could do was stare at Candy like a hawk. Surprised, Joe was told that Candy followed him and knew where he lived and what school he attends; she told him herself. At this point, its pretty obvious that Candy likes Joe in the same freaky way he likes her. At first it looked like Joe fooled the audience with calling Candy a prostitute... she is only a dancer and she explains how on TV he would see more flesh than hers; however, Candy fooled him because she really is a prostitute and Iggy is her "pimp". At band rehearsal, Joe sung a song about candy and it just "happened". He sung about how her eyes take him away... that same day, Joe discovered that Candy smokes heroin.

QUOTATION
"So after a while, that's what I did. I gave up trying to make conversation and just wandered along behind her, watching her every move. At first I tried to be subtle about it-- disguising my glances, pretending to look elsewhere-- but, as far as I could tell, she wasn't aware of my attention, so in the end I stopped trying to be subtle and just watched her quite openly instead" (Brooks 79).

REACTION
Joe is explaining how much he is attracted to Candy and wants to "be with her" in this quote. In the scene, Candy was amazed at all the animals at the zoo moving quickly at observing every single detail of each animal. This made Joe feel awkward and he felt like he was "watching her... like some kind of sicko". He wants to tell her how he feels about her desperately but he hasn't become man enough to do so. This quote in important because it shows how he currently acts towards Candy. Its kind of like Joe has an obsession with her or hes just crazy if you read what he does, however with this quote, you begin to understand what he feels deep down. Readers can connect more with Joe.
