CANDY 280-364

SUMMARY
In this section Candy continues her desire to go to Iggy... in fact Iggy ends up finding Joe's number and calls him asking for his "bleep". He threatened Joe to give him Candy by keeping Gina held captive. Joe heard Gina through the phone and envisioned himself killing Iggy. He had to choose between his sister Gina... or Candy. He told Candy she is not going back to him because he will kill her. Candy argued there was no other choice... Iggy expects Joe and Candy to be at the cottage and he'd be there in two hours. Mike, Gina's fiance called Joe asking for Gina and scared to say, Joe told him where she was and Mike sped his way to the cottage. When Iggy arrived Joe wanted to see Gina before he'd give up Candy. I actually got confused when Candy stood over Mike with a knife and his blood on it... then she ran to Iggy telling him she only left because Joe forced her to. Then she stabbed Iggy in his neck. The police came; they arrested Candy and life sort of went back to normal. He visited Candy for a final time at a mental institution. She apologized to him for everything that has happened because of her and that was the last time Joe ever spoke to Candy again.

QUOTE
"From six o' clock until midnight, Candy's soul screamed in every way possible: temperature raged from hot to cold; her limbs burned; she sweated slime; her muscles ached; her stomach knotted; her skin itched; her eyes watered;her nose streamed; her head throbbed; she smelled bad; she sneezed so violently I thought she was going to burst something. And all the time, on top of this, there was vomiting and diarrhea and raging thirst and waking dreams...
And all because of chemistry.
Her body was holding her ransom. Give me what I want or I'll make you sick. I'll hurt you. I'll kill you. I'll drive you insane. GIVE ME WHAT I WANT!" (Brooks 295).

REACTION
This was the scene where Candy decided she would go to Iggy and get more drugs. Joe would not let her leave; he stood in front of the door and told her she was not going any where. Joe describes what Candy is going through vividly. I can pretty much picture her to be a sad and pathetic girl sitting on the floor going crazy and looking disturbed all because of drugs. I chose this quote because its very detailed and even uses personification at the end. Where her body was personified to "holding her ransom" threatening her to go get the drugs she "needs" or it would do horrible things to her. I also like this quote because you can tell through Joe's tone that he feels really bad for Candy. For example when he says "on top of this" he is basically saying "oh my god... and what is worse is...".

CANDY 231-279

SUMMARY
At this point of the story, Joe is still obsessing over Candy and acts immature at times because of it; however he actually realizes that hes acting childish now. Theres a foreshadowing in the story, "'OK, but just remember one thing-- whatever feelings she has for you, they won't be as strong as the feelings she has for heroin. If you want to help her, you might have to lose her'
'At the time, I didn't know what he meant, but I found out later that he was right. Maybe not in the way he intended, but I don't suppose that matters. He was right, intentionally or not... He was right'" (Brooks 240). This quote got me thinking that Candy may die (I hope not). Candy had no where to go and Joe wanted her to stay with him in his old family cottage. She finally agreed and when they got to the cottage one part made me laugh... Joe was trying to find candles because it was really dark inside and he got side tracked and began making duck shadows and quacking. you can obviously see a difference in maturity when Candy told him to hurry and find the candles. While they drank tea and relaxed, Candy told him about how heroin is like oxygen to her. Without it shes scared of what could happen. Inside, Joe hated heroin for taking Candy "away from me". Finally Joe felt that she may need to use again so he allowed her to in the cottage and he says it was the last time he seen her smile. She told Joe not to give into her anymore no matter how hard she cried or how angry she was. I noticed Candy was really rude to Joe after she hasnt used heroin for a few days and in a way he expected it. The final scene in this section has Candy trying to leave to Iggy so she can get more heroin. Senselessly, she wants to go back to Iggy! The man who wants her dead! Jow would not let her go.

QUOTE
"If you can't be selfish and immature with your big sister, what's the point of having one?" (Brooks 231).

REACTION
This quote actually made me laugh. I agree with him a lot. My sister and me act so immature together... like i lose all my good behavior when it comes to her. Shes almost seven, I'm fifteen; however we both act like we are five years old. "You did it stop lying to me!", "Na uh you did it I ain't lying!", "shut up!". Even though shes younger I always want to be immature with her and I don't know why. I guess its a sisters duty?
I think a sibling gives you an excuse to be childish and selfish every once in a while.

CANDY 178-230

SUMMARY
Iggy and his crew heard what Joe and the Katies (his band) were singing. This resulted in a fight between Iggy and candy and Iggy almist killed Joe's sister's fiance in the process. Iggy looked at Joe evily and dragged Candy out. Joe decided to go search for Candy because shes been missing with Iggy. He found her at Iggy's home while he was gone; she was bruised up and told Joe he must leave. He explained he wasn't going to leave and Candy finally let him in and explained "I'm a whore, Joe. I go with men for money. I give the money to Iggy. He gives me drugs. Thats all there is to it". Of course Joe tried convincing her she didn't have to live the way she does. Thats when Iggy came home and Joe hid in the bathroom. Then Joe's phone rang and Iggy caught Joe. Almost killed by Iggy, Joe was saved by Candy hitting Iggy with a lamp. He didn't die but they were thinking about making that come true. Tied up and uncaucious, Iggy was the issue Candy and Joe didn't kno what to do with... but surprisingly Iggy freed himself making Candy and Joe take off in his car. Joe drove Candy to his home and asked her to stsy with him but she didn't want him to get hurt and said no to his offer. Joe promised he'd take her to a cottage in thirty minutes if she stayed for that long at his house.

QUOTE
"I couldn't stand it anymore. I stepped up and swung my foot at his head. A juddering pain shot up my leg and for a moment I thought I'd kicked the wall by mistake, but then I looked down and saw that Iggy had stopped moving and there was a faint red mark on his cheek, so I guessed I must have hit the target. Not that it made much difference" (Brooks 210).

REACTION
Joe becomes a man in this scene. He learned to fight for things, at this moment in particular Candy. He shows bravery when he kicked Iggy although he was violent. After this scene, Joe has the courage to ask Candy to cone into his house and he stopped being nervous around her. This is an important quote because it shows how within seconds Joe changed from being scared to even look at Iggy, to kicking him. Without it, the audience would not have seen him gain courage because of Candy.

CANDY 72-178

SUMMARY
Candy invited Joe to go with her to the zoo and while she focussed on the animals, all Joe could do was stare at Candy like a hawk. Surprised, Joe was told that Candy followed him and knew where he lived and what school he attends; she told him herself. At this point, its pretty obvious that Candy likes Joe in the same freaky way he likes her. At first it looked like Joe fooled the audience with calling Candy a prostitute... she is only a dancer and she explains how on TV he would see more flesh than hers; however, Candy fooled him because she really is a prostitute and Iggy is her "pimp". At band rehearsal, Joe sung a song about candy and it just "happened". He sung about how her eyes take him away... that same day, Joe discovered that Candy smokes heroin.

QUOTATION
"So after a while, that's what I did. I gave up trying to make conversation and just wandered along behind her, watching her every move. At first I tried to be subtle about it-- disguising my glances, pretending to look elsewhere-- but, as far as I could tell, she wasn't aware of my attention, so in the end I stopped trying to be subtle and just watched her quite openly instead" (Brooks 79).

REACTION
Joe is explaining how much he is attracted to Candy and wants to "be with her" in this quote. In the scene, Candy was amazed at all the animals at the zoo moving quickly at observing every single detail of each animal. This made Joe feel awkward and he felt like he was "watching her... like some kind of sicko". He wants to tell her how he feels about her desperately but he hasn't become man enough to do so. This quote in important because it shows how he currently acts towards Candy. Its kind of like Joe has an obsession with her or hes just crazy if you read what he does, however with this quote, you begin to understand what he feels deep down. Readers can connect more with Joe.

Candy 1-72

Summary

Joe, the typical afraid of teens musician, meets a girl at the train station he can't forget. Candy however is a prostitute and Joe is unaware of this fact for a while. As Candy and Joe happily ate lunch together at the station, a "black man" hovered over their table. The man scared Joe to death and was worried about beinq killed. Iggy, the black man threatened Joe many times and Candy bravely stood up to protect him. Joe had the opportunity to finally leave and when he did he was out of there real quick. When Joe was home, safe and calm, all he could seem to think about was Candy. Candy, her "pimp" Iggy, Candy, Iggy... he dug in his pockets and found a rolled up paper. He knew what it was and how it was placed there... inside the blank index card, CANDY was written along with a number. When he finally has the nerves to call, they discuss like an everyday people conversation... then Iggy came home and she had to go.

Quote

"Nervous hands are hard to disguise when they're idle" (Brooks 17).

Reaction

In this quote, not only do i agree entirely, anyone could tell how timid Joe was. If he sat there without moving his hands, he wouldn't be able to hide himself from shaking. This is an important quote because the audience knows that Joe is a very nervous protagonist. When he talks to Candy, hes petrified. Iggy coming and ruining lunch, he was scared to death. His sister telling his dad about her marrying someone he wont approve, hes even scared about that. His mom and dad getting back together freightens Joe. He doesn't like to be seen as this type of boy... he tries to hide everything from the world and seclude himself from it to feel "cool". If Joe is not doing anything to hide his timidity, he will embarass himself greatly.

The Brothers Bulger (279-332)

SUMMARY

Seven weeks after Billy's election, on December 23, 1994, Whitey was gone for good and the cops didn't want to believe it. Everyone of Whitey's old pals was either in jail at the time or died after being arrested. While Whitey was missing, Billy was writing his autobiography titled "While the Music Lasts". In this book, he explains his past and talks about Whitey. As expected, Billy lost the campaign to Loftcus. This was the first time a Bulger was defeated and last time any would run for any elective office again. Randomly stated and quite surprisingly, Whitey loves dogs to the point of crying for them. When he seen a man put down a puppy by shooting it, he wept. Whitey also kept dog treats in his car for any strays. A corrupt man has a sensitive spot... wasn't expected. Whitey also loves his brother; thats obvious. He'd always threaten people for Billy even though Billy was against that. Although what Whitey did for Billy was immoral, it still showed a lot of love. It's like a man robbing a bank to pay for his dying daughter. There were many people that called themselves the "anti-Bulgers". They'd constantly write about the brothers negatively. With all the facts in the media and other causes, Whitey hid from the world. On September 3, 2009, Whitey turned eighty and to this day, Whitey Bulger is still missing. It is believed Billy Bulger sends his brother money, but the truth is nobody really knows.

QUOTATION

"Gamel got the distinct impression that Billy did not want to be talking to the FBI. Gamel told Billy that if he did hear from Whitey, he should urge Whitey to call Gamel, so that a surrender could be arranged.
'I'll consider it,' said Billy.
Later that month Billy and Whitey did speak, on the phone, at Eddie Phillips' house. Gamel did not recieve a call from Billy" (Carr 281).

RESPONSE

In this quote, we have FBI agent, John Gamel discussing with Billy Bulger on Whitey. Gamel wants Billy to basically persuade Whitey to surrender to the FBI. When Billy says "I'll consider it," I knew that Billy would just tell Whitey that Gamel wants him to give himself in. Or, its possible that Whitey just told Billy he won't do such a thing. That remains a mystery, however either way, I feel Billy showed affection towards Whitey. He wanted to help Whitey in either case. Gamel not recieving a call was predictable. I mean come on... its Whitey Bulger!

The Brothers Bulger (217-279)

SUMMARY

By 1988, the Bulgers were at the top of their games. Whitey began to sell cocaine as well as protect his fellow sellers. Billy, still served as the unelected governor of Massachusetts. He was the King of the Hill (Beacon Hill). Both made money off the hook. For more than a decade, the Boston Office of the FBI had done Whitey's bidding; vice versa. At the time, pretty much every person who was wealthy in Massachusetts was a crook, drunk and a cheat. John Morris, the head of the public corruption unit was losing the respect he earned by the Mass population and his only way to redeem himself was through exposing the corrupt marriage of Whitey Bulger and the FBI. Reporters from the globe interviewed Billy and the irascible Whitey went berserk. He knew it was Morris that ratted him out. Because he was Whitey's brother, Billy's career began to crash, resulting in his terrible depression. Over time, nothing positively really changed for either of the Bulgers and Whitey was to blame for both of their shame.

QUOTE

"Whitey and Billy would be the twin symbols of the corruption and profligacy of the last eight years. Billy's thirty years in that was legislature were suddenly an afterthought; his only identity was as the brother of 'cocaine dealer Whitey Bulger'" (Carr 249).

RESPONSE

Opposite brothers effected eachother's lives. Billy was not recognized as the state legislature any more. He was noticed as the political brother of Whitey. Whitey... the drug dealer, the murderer, the psychopath. Although Billy may have done a mayriad of good things, it was as if nothing mattered. As a result of this, Billy became depressed. Life for Billy would never change back to the way it used to be.

The Brothers Bulger (130-217)

SUMMARY

Anyone who was affiliated with the gang, was either in prison or a fugitive. The gang only had two members now; Whitey and Stevie. A man named Steven Hughes Jr. seeked revenge on Whitey and Stevie Flemmi, however they beat Hughes Jr. at his own game. Whitey never loses. Whitey is insane!- he threw french fries at a man who had his gut popping out of his t-shirt. As he aged, he was obsessed with staying healthy physically. Because of less people in the gang, it was weaker than the Mafia and Whitey knew this. When Whitey killed so many people, he liked to make a statement either by disappearing the body. Another way Whitey intimidated the Mafia with such a small gang was through selling drugs.

Billy, exactly like his brother, loves being in control... "It didn't matter much to Billy who won the governorship. Who ever the government was, he going to have to play ball with Billy, and abide by his rules" (Carr 154). He was living happily and in control. This is kind of the opposite of Whitey. Billy can travel anywhere he wants for a vacation, a stress-free one. However, Whitey (although he may not have admitted it) was never worry-free.

QUOTE

"That evening, Corsetti was sitting by himself at the bar when an average-sized, middle-aged man pulled up the stool next to him.
'You're Paul Corsetti, aren't you?' he said.
Corsetti nodded, and the garrulous fellow made more small talk, until finally Corsetti said, 'I'd like to talk to you, but I'm waiting for somebody.'
The man's smile disappeared. 'You're waiting for me mother**r,' he said. 'I'm Jimmy Bulger and I kill people'" (Carr 139).

REACTION

His whole life it has been pretty obvious that hes the man. Nobody messes with Whitey Bulger. This quote shows that even though he was a very popular man back then, he was not easily recognizable. Corsetti could have died on the spot right during their conversation. What is very frightening is the last sentence,"I'm Jimmy Bulger and I kill people". Whitey told Cosetti who he is by his first name and last name rather than Whitey. He said "I kill people". This should scare any body who was told a full name and that that person was a murderer. It shows that Corsetti will die, which he does, and he could not have done anything about it.

The Brothers Bulger (66-130)

SUMMARY

Unsurprisingly, Billy Bulger won in the democratic primary against McCormach. He was also sworn into the state senate in January 1971. By 1972, both Bulgers rose higher in their respective trades. Just like his brother, Whitey Bulger wanted to issue commands; not follow them. However, he hated the law enforcement. Unlike his buddy Stevie, Whitey still hadn't been officially "opened" by the FBI as an informant. He became a top Echelon informant for the FBI in 1975. Whitey's first durty duty he accomplished himself was shooting past robbers named the Conors, in a phone booth. His partner in crime was his close friend Stevie during the assassination. What is a little confusing is how Whitey is the only FBI (full blood Irish) in his gang, so hes apart from everyone, yet hes in control. What annoys me is how people rat him out to the FBI and they never listen. For example, on page 90, Frank Capizzi was shot three times by Whitey. "Despite Capizzi's positive identification, Whitey was not arrested. Nor was headed for the top of the rackets."

QUOTE

" 'Why'd you hit Joe like that, in front of so many people? Right downtown there, in broad daylight?'
Whitey Bulger threw his two cents worth: 'Because we wanted to show everyone how easy it is'" (Carr 78).

REACTION

Carr put this quote into this story to tell the readers an important message. Whitey is not scared of being caught or killed. He doesn't even pay attention to that. What he wants, he will get. Whitey will stop at nothing to get what he wants and an easy way to accomplish his goals is through hardcore intimidation. Whitey punched Joe in front of alot of people strolling downtown happily! You don't see that everyday because a normal person would privately take care of buisness such as violence. In addition to knowing he will get his goals, hes showing off when he says "we wanted to show...how easy it is". He doesn't even have to work hard...if he sees something he wants to be accomplish, it will definitely happen.

The Brothers Bulger (1-67)

SUMMARY

Howie Carr writes the biography titled "The Brothers Bulger" full of facts and it is like an extended timeline. William "Billy" and James "Whitey" Bulger are the complete opposites and its hard to believe that they are brothers. Billy turned out to be the President of the Massachusetts State Senate and The University of Massachusetts while Whitey would send his people to murder anyone he wished. Government and a criminal go figure. Having difficulty achieving his high position based upon his brother's actions and his "one suit", Billy still however turned out successful. Meanwhile, Whitey went to prison for ten years. Whitey was accused of rape twice but sentenced for assault instead. He would tell people such as his close buddy Stevie Flemmi to go out and kill any person he'd order him to. He did what he did simply because he could.

QUOTE

"At noon the next day, on the McLaughlins' home turf of City Square, Charlestown, Buddy McLean shot Bernie McLaughlin in the back of the head in front of dozens of witnesses, none of whom offered to positively identify the shooter for the police. The war was on, and before it was over, more than forty Boston hoodlums would be dead" (Carr 55).

REACTION

Used in third person, this quote shows the rising action. This is where the war between the Winter Hill Gang and the McLaughlins of Charlestown, truly began. "More than forty Boston hoodlums would be dead", shows that because of what happened, this will be the outcome. To understand when and why the bloodshed between each Irish gang started is by understanding this quote. It explains who started the war first and foreshadows that nothing positive comes out of it.
