CANDY 280-364

SUMMARY
In this section Candy continues her desire to go to Iggy... in fact Iggy ends up finding Joe's number and calls him asking for his "bleep". He threatened Joe to give him Candy by keeping Gina held captive. Joe heard Gina through the phone and envisioned himself killing Iggy. He had to choose between his sister Gina... or Candy. He told Candy she is not going back to him because he will kill her. Candy argued there was no other choice... Iggy expects Joe and Candy to be at the cottage and he'd be there in two hours. Mike, Gina's fiance called Joe asking for Gina and scared to say, Joe told him where she was and Mike sped his way to the cottage. When Iggy arrived Joe wanted to see Gina before he'd give up Candy. I actually got confused when Candy stood over Mike with a knife and his blood on it... then she ran to Iggy telling him she only left because Joe forced her to. Then she stabbed Iggy in his neck. The police came; they arrested Candy and life sort of went back to normal. He visited Candy for a final time at a mental institution. She apologized to him for everything that has happened because of her and that was the last time Joe ever spoke to Candy again.

QUOTE
"From six o' clock until midnight, Candy's soul screamed in every way possible: temperature raged from hot to cold; her limbs burned; she sweated slime; her muscles ached; her stomach knotted; her skin itched; her eyes watered;her nose streamed; her head throbbed; she smelled bad; she sneezed so violently I thought she was going to burst something. And all the time, on top of this, there was vomiting and diarrhea and raging thirst and waking dreams...
And all because of chemistry.
Her body was holding her ransom. Give me what I want or I'll make you sick. I'll hurt you. I'll kill you. I'll drive you insane. GIVE ME WHAT I WANT!" (Brooks 295).

REACTION
This was the scene where Candy decided she would go to Iggy and get more drugs. Joe would not let her leave; he stood in front of the door and told her she was not going any where. Joe describes what Candy is going through vividly. I can pretty much picture her to be a sad and pathetic girl sitting on the floor going crazy and looking disturbed all because of drugs. I chose this quote because its very detailed and even uses personification at the end. Where her body was personified to "holding her ransom" threatening her to go get the drugs she "needs" or it would do horrible things to her. I also like this quote because you can tell through Joe's tone that he feels really bad for Candy. For example when he says "on top of this" he is basically saying "oh my god... and what is worse is...".

CANDY 231-279

SUMMARY
At this point of the story, Joe is still obsessing over Candy and acts immature at times because of it; however he actually realizes that hes acting childish now. Theres a foreshadowing in the story, "'OK, but just remember one thing-- whatever feelings she has for you, they won't be as strong as the feelings she has for heroin. If you want to help her, you might have to lose her'
'At the time, I didn't know what he meant, but I found out later that he was right. Maybe not in the way he intended, but I don't suppose that matters. He was right, intentionally or not... He was right'" (Brooks 240). This quote got me thinking that Candy may die (I hope not). Candy had no where to go and Joe wanted her to stay with him in his old family cottage. She finally agreed and when they got to the cottage one part made me laugh... Joe was trying to find candles because it was really dark inside and he got side tracked and began making duck shadows and quacking. you can obviously see a difference in maturity when Candy told him to hurry and find the candles. While they drank tea and relaxed, Candy told him about how heroin is like oxygen to her. Without it shes scared of what could happen. Inside, Joe hated heroin for taking Candy "away from me". Finally Joe felt that she may need to use again so he allowed her to in the cottage and he says it was the last time he seen her smile. She told Joe not to give into her anymore no matter how hard she cried or how angry she was. I noticed Candy was really rude to Joe after she hasnt used heroin for a few days and in a way he expected it. The final scene in this section has Candy trying to leave to Iggy so she can get more heroin. Senselessly, she wants to go back to Iggy! The man who wants her dead! Jow would not let her go.

QUOTE
"If you can't be selfish and immature with your big sister, what's the point of having one?" (Brooks 231).

REACTION
This quote actually made me laugh. I agree with him a lot. My sister and me act so immature together... like i lose all my good behavior when it comes to her. Shes almost seven, I'm fifteen; however we both act like we are five years old. "You did it stop lying to me!", "Na uh you did it I ain't lying!", "shut up!". Even though shes younger I always want to be immature with her and I don't know why. I guess its a sisters duty?
I think a sibling gives you an excuse to be childish and selfish every once in a while.

CANDY 178-230

SUMMARY
Iggy and his crew heard what Joe and the Katies (his band) were singing. This resulted in a fight between Iggy and candy and Iggy almist killed Joe's sister's fiance in the process. Iggy looked at Joe evily and dragged Candy out. Joe decided to go search for Candy because shes been missing with Iggy. He found her at Iggy's home while he was gone; she was bruised up and told Joe he must leave. He explained he wasn't going to leave and Candy finally let him in and explained "I'm a whore, Joe. I go with men for money. I give the money to Iggy. He gives me drugs. Thats all there is to it". Of course Joe tried convincing her she didn't have to live the way she does. Thats when Iggy came home and Joe hid in the bathroom. Then Joe's phone rang and Iggy caught Joe. Almost killed by Iggy, Joe was saved by Candy hitting Iggy with a lamp. He didn't die but they were thinking about making that come true. Tied up and uncaucious, Iggy was the issue Candy and Joe didn't kno what to do with... but surprisingly Iggy freed himself making Candy and Joe take off in his car. Joe drove Candy to his home and asked her to stsy with him but she didn't want him to get hurt and said no to his offer. Joe promised he'd take her to a cottage in thirty minutes if she stayed for that long at his house.

QUOTE
"I couldn't stand it anymore. I stepped up and swung my foot at his head. A juddering pain shot up my leg and for a moment I thought I'd kicked the wall by mistake, but then I looked down and saw that Iggy had stopped moving and there was a faint red mark on his cheek, so I guessed I must have hit the target. Not that it made much difference" (Brooks 210).

REACTION
Joe becomes a man in this scene. He learned to fight for things, at this moment in particular Candy. He shows bravery when he kicked Iggy although he was violent. After this scene, Joe has the courage to ask Candy to cone into his house and he stopped being nervous around her. This is an important quote because it shows how within seconds Joe changed from being scared to even look at Iggy, to kicking him. Without it, the audience would not have seen him gain courage because of Candy.

CANDY 72-178

SUMMARY
Candy invited Joe to go with her to the zoo and while she focussed on the animals, all Joe could do was stare at Candy like a hawk. Surprised, Joe was told that Candy followed him and knew where he lived and what school he attends; she told him herself. At this point, its pretty obvious that Candy likes Joe in the same freaky way he likes her. At first it looked like Joe fooled the audience with calling Candy a prostitute... she is only a dancer and she explains how on TV he would see more flesh than hers; however, Candy fooled him because she really is a prostitute and Iggy is her "pimp". At band rehearsal, Joe sung a song about candy and it just "happened". He sung about how her eyes take him away... that same day, Joe discovered that Candy smokes heroin.

QUOTATION
"So after a while, that's what I did. I gave up trying to make conversation and just wandered along behind her, watching her every move. At first I tried to be subtle about it-- disguising my glances, pretending to look elsewhere-- but, as far as I could tell, she wasn't aware of my attention, so in the end I stopped trying to be subtle and just watched her quite openly instead" (Brooks 79).

REACTION
Joe is explaining how much he is attracted to Candy and wants to "be with her" in this quote. In the scene, Candy was amazed at all the animals at the zoo moving quickly at observing every single detail of each animal. This made Joe feel awkward and he felt like he was "watching her... like some kind of sicko". He wants to tell her how he feels about her desperately but he hasn't become man enough to do so. This quote in important because it shows how he currently acts towards Candy. Its kind of like Joe has an obsession with her or hes just crazy if you read what he does, however with this quote, you begin to understand what he feels deep down. Readers can connect more with Joe.
